Oh geez, I put a request in for this in the request thread yesterday. I feel so stupid.
Thank you. The lyrics are beautiful. I honestly just cried a little... |

sljinu,
I might be wrong but I think the 3rd stanza is actually this:
恋している そんなふうに呼ぶのかな
忘れようとすればするほど 欲しくなる
そんなにあなたとあたしは違うの?
どうしても二人にはなれない
The imagery of this song and it's relation of "jellyfish" to "shooting star" is particular interesting to me. This year, I took an extended trip to Japan to peruse some of my favorite haunts there as well as experience some new things I hadn't seen or done before. Although there were many things that found their way into my memories, one such one was the Osaka Aquarium. There are few things in life that I have seen with such picturesque unmodified beauty (we all know how photoshop can add/modify "wow!" factor) but many things in that aquarium were among them. In particular, was the jellyfish exhibit where you could see a multitude of different jellyfish swim and glide about. In this particular exhibit, the lights were darkened and all of the aquarium tanks housing the jellyfish consisted of either a pitch black or a dark cerulean blue. Swimming, as if almost floating, around in these tanks were jellyfish of beautiful shades of orange, yellow and red; a pure and untainted beauty. Recalling how they streaked through the black waters, I find the comparison between a shooting star and a jellyfish not too farfetched. I can't help but think that perhaps Otsuka Ai had seen the same exhibit in Osaka...haha..
Suffice to say, I remember spending an unusually longer amount of time in that exhibit than the rest.
The following translation is not literal as I embellished small parts of it:
just like every night, distant and so far away,
the desire to see you but being unable to; it floats around in my conscious
I wonder if such thoughts are unrealistic...
Even under this starry night sky, are you having the same thoughts and thinking of me too?
If I come across that sailing jellyfish star
your name and the thought of you drifts to mind
even though, there are (little) things about you I may not like
It doesn't change the fact that I like you so much.
I wonder if calling out your name (to the sailing jellyfish star) is to be in love..
even trying to forget you, I find myself wanting you more
Is thinking of you and I together so wrong?
after all, the two of us can't be together.
being unable to find that sailing jellyfish star star,
it's as if I'd forget the words you spoke to me
If I have the strength to believe in (this) one thing
then it may not be so painful to stay in love with you...
If I come across that sailing jellyfish star
your name and the thought of you drifts to mind
even though, there are (little) things (about you) I may not like
it doesn't change the fact that I love you so much. |

Thanks vllasko and Rei for pointing that out. I didn't write down the lyrics from my own ear though so I'm excused for once No I'm joking, I should have paid more attention . Anyway, I'll have it fixed...and regarding your translation vllasko, while I may not agree with all of it, you certainly gave me more ideas on how I could improve upon my own!
And thanks for the insight about the aquarium in Osaka! I went there for 3 days on my last trip to Japan but I never got round to going there...if the exhibit is still up, I'm 100% sure that is going to be one thing I see in Osaka next time I visit! |

thanks for all your translation work, sljinu. i noticed the official lyrics are up at goo.ne.jp. there are a small number if differences with your Japanese text, although i have no idea if they are at all significant. it could be font variations for all i know. i am so clueless in this area. here are the official lyrics, with what look like variations (to me) highlighted:

^ Thanks for bringing up the official lyrics! And no, those minor differences aren't of much significance luckily I'm gonna work on the Excite interview soon so hopefully that one can give me more information for the translation (unlike the Oricon Style one) and once that's complete, I'll finalise these lyrics once and for all.
As for why it's different...lvul8tr transcribed them him/herself. Hiragana, katakana and kanji are all used almost according to the writer's preferences so it's difficult to note which one should be written in what form when listening only. An emphasis may be applied on certain words or whatever, but the overall meaning is still there |
